One can usually count on some kind of positive thoughts from my Aunt Jane, but this video takes the cake. I know that we’re all very busy, and may not have 15 minutes to spare, but you’ll be glad you watched this…

Coaschtal Update

By Jack Schtuff:

This is a busy week for the San Mateo County coast, as Half Moon Bay’s Ocean Course will be hosting the LPGA Samsung World Championship. The tournament begins today with the Pro-Am running through Sunday October 5th.

This is a great opportunity to showcase the lifestyle near the Half Moon Bay Golf Links. The adjacent Ritz-Carlton provides a great backdrop to Ocean Colony, the popular gated-community with over 530 homes. Many residents enjoy the members only Colony Club, which includes the indoor/outdoor pool, 2 spas, 6 lighted tennis courts and a half basketball court. Ocean Colony residents also get a break on the golf membership, giving you the option of playing the Arnold Palmer designed Old Course, or the Ocean Course – the links design by Arthur Hills in 1997.

Home prices range from $875,000 – 100 Birkdale Rd. to $3,650,000 – 117 Spyglass Ln. (both of which are currently on the market).  Let me know if you’re interested – I’m happy to show you around the area.

Schteamed Schnapper

By Jack Schtuff:

Hungry for a fish feast? Usually I’m a fan of broiling or Q-ing salmon or halibut, as the flame adds some color and unmistakable flavor. However the purists-especially with fresh or self caught fish–may prefer to steam their catch. It’s a healthy, easy alternative – and it’s really hard to over-cook. Snapper, sole or other white fish seems to work best for steaming, but I suppose you could use any sorta sea meat.

Recipe for 2 – 8 oz. fillets. Combine the following ingredients in a large mixing bowl and set aside…

  • 1/4 cup fresh chopped cilantro
  • 3 tablespoons chopped green onion
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, peeled & grated
  • 1 tablespoon fresh garlic, chopped fine
  • 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 cup bottled clam juice
  • 2 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoon toasted sesame oil

Schurfing

By Jack Schtuff:

Whether your surfing Stinson Beach, paddling out at Ocean Beach, or man enough for Mavericks, you’re all braver than I…

The shores of the Pacific Ocean from Marin to Monterey are loaded with sea life and so – the predator from below. Whatever waters you decide to surf, you’re rolling the dice with Jaws! You go out there and dress up like sea lions, flap around and hope to catch a few waves. I’ve lived on the coast all my life, and have not really even given it a thought. Not to mention the water is basically sub zero, but these great whites are hungry, and they’ll tear you up.

Now with a new technological advance you can attach a device to your board that sends an electric signal into the water that keeps sharks off your tail. It’s a “shark shield”, and it’s a great idea for those that want to buy a little peace of mind. I’m sold…

Wait, I don’t surf. But if you do, you should look into this or send this schtuff out to your surfer friends.

Schuschtainable Lifeschtyles

By Jack Schtuff:

If you’ll be in or near the city on Labor Day weekend, consider marking your calendars for the Slow Food Nation Festival at City Hall. They call it the “Victory Garden”, and it’s a deep-rooted concept that brings fresh food to urban people. Sure we have our Whole Foods and other “fresh” markets…but there’s something about picking greens, carrots, and a radish bouquet from rich, organic soil, and chopping it up in your salad. Agree?

From the AP:

Snap peas, broccoli, leeks, eggplant, pumpkins and peppers are flourishing in City Hall’s front yard, a bounty meant to peak for the festival. After the last speech, it will be harvested and donated to the San Francisco Food Bank for distribution to the needy. Touchy about his image as one of “these nutty mayors,” as he put it, Mayor Gavin Newsom denies there is any hippie plantation outside his office. “Not everyone gets it yet. There have been some folks who criticize this as if we are building some farm out in City Hall,” he said.
“This whole movement,” it turns out, includes a whole buffet of issues, from protecting workers’ and growers’ rights; to banishing pesticides and other chemicals; to ensuring rich and poor have equal access to good food.

Schimple Schtuffed Schquash

By Jack Schtuff:

Summer is in full schwing and your local Farmer’s Market likely has an over-sized zucchini with your name on it…

Slice it long-ways, dig out the seeds, brush with a little olive oil and hit it with sea salt and fresh pepper. Toss ‘er into a 350 degree oven (open-faced) to roast for 30-45 minutes or so, depending on the size.

Once it starts to soften, take it out and let the fun begin. The beauty is that you can schtuff this thing with whatever kind of meats, cheeses, herbs or other veggies that you have on hand. Personally, I like to go with crumbled browned sausage, goat cheese and plenty of chives. Then pop it in the oven for about 10-15 minutes to finish.

This is also the kind of thing that you can prepare in advance, and whip it out last minute to impress your guests with something fresh and different. Get creative, make it colorful and enjoy.

4th Of July Weekend

By Jack Schtuff:

Things to do this holiday weekend:

4th of July reminder for the Schtuffers:

First, I understand that people in the city, and around the Bay Area, like to party it up a bit this weekend, but make sure you invite somebody to stay sober and drive you around. There will be checkpoints, there will be DUI’s given out like candy on Halloween, and every year – there will be related accidents that may or may not end in fatality. DON’T LET ANY OF THIS HAPPEN TO YOU!

Second, we’ve seen a large number of fires in NorCal already this year, and we can’t afford to start any more. When it comes to fireworks, DON’T BE DUMB! You don’t want to be the jackass to blame for starting a fire…of any kind.

Schteamed Chokes & Garlic EVOO

By Jack Schtuff:

The preparation on an artichoke takes a bit of time and care, but it really makes a difference when you do it right. With a large, sharp knife – chop the top off of the crown of the choke. Next, get your scissors and cut the stickers off the top of each leaf.

Some people dip leaves in butter or aioli, but it’s also nice (and healthier) to go with the garlic infused extra virgin olive oil. Trader Joe’s has fresh peeled garlic…lightly smash 2-3 cloves with the flat side of your knife, and add 1/4 cup or more EVOO.

If you’re planning on leaving the chokes whole…pop them in some boiling water with an olive oil drizzle, a bit of fresh pepper and lemon juice. Depending on their size, cook 20-40 minutes. If you can easily pull a leaf, the chokes are done. Finish with more lemon juice and sea salt and serve.

Seasonal Veggies 101

veggies.jpg

jackschtuffsized1.jpg

By: Jack Schtuff

Since you are what you eat, I thought it might be nice to include a bit more food education on schtuff, to add to our collection of recipes.

This website http://www.cuesa.org/seasonality/charts/vegetable.php will provide a bit of insight for what veggies are in season, events and programs, and highlights special content on urban education for sustainable agriculture.

Also, SF Gate’s recent article http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2008/03/05/FDGKULTR9.DTL gives you some uncommon ideas for making the most of your shopping experience.

Last, http://www.fsis.usda.gov/fact_sheets/index.asp?src_location=content&src_page=FSEd
is a fact sheet from the USDA, detailing specifics on handling and preparation of different foods.

Eat fresh, laugh, love and live long.
