Get In the Spirit: Santacon Invades SF 2008
Dust off that old Santa suit and get ready to get your yule tide on! Every December for over a decade, Cacophonic Santa’s have terrorized conventional wisdom by staging events covering the globe. From Portland, Oregon to the Ukraine, St. Nicks have traveled far and wide for this ritual of intoxication and most importantly–giving. The 2008 SF Santacon will take place on December 13, 2008, but no further details are yet available, due to the secret, rave-like nature of this event, so stay tuned for schedules and meeting spots.
Bring:
- toys
- mistletoe
- beer money
- drinking vessel
- lube (the reindeer can get freaky if you know what I mean)
- comfortable shoes
- musical instrument or noisemaker
- healthy set of pipes because there’ll be some caroling out in those streets!
Rules:
- Don’t f*ck with kids. The holidays are hard enough on the little bastards.
- Don’t f*ck with the police. They might f*ck with you.
- Don’t f*ck with security. They will call the police (see rule #2)
- Don’t f*ck with Santa. He will ABSOLUTELY f*ck with you.
Enjoy the festive, friendly confines of Thanksgiving. This Christmas will bring a Santa Invasion. Nothing can stop the red tide!

Halloween in the Post-Castro-Party City
By Anna M. Hibble:
Halloween can be a…tricky time. If you’ve got kids, you want them to have fun in a safe way. What a buzz kill though to have to take the bags of candy to the hospital to have them x-rayed. Meanwhile, if you’re not a kid, nor do you have them, you too want to have fun- not too safe, but all that blood and death and such is supposed to be fake, so where can you go? For the past three years, I’ve gone to a house party in Fort Mason, in a sprawling officer’s mansion overlooking Aquatic Park. This year, the hosts have decided not to… well, host, and I find I have no idea what people do now that the Castro thing is over with.
Thus from my research is born this post. You’ll see I’ve divided the ideas, which are by no means exhaustive (comment with your Halloween insider’s knowledge, please) into schtuff for adults, and schtuff for kids.
For the Adults (and those pretending to be):
- Rocky Horror Picture Show Alive: Don’t roll your eyes yet; this is not the cliched dress up and yell out the lines thing that will. Just. Not. Die. No, this is a play, a live reenactment of the film, performed by Ray of Light Theater actors.
- Halloween Ball at the Regency: lots of undressed looking costumes and DJs (I fail to see the real difference between this and a typical Sunday at the End Up). Still, the co-hosts– SalsaCrazy, GenArt, CarnavalSF– make it seem like it might be worth the ticket price.
- Exotic Erotic Ball: If you’ve not heard of it, you’ve been asleep. This does not mean you should go; it just means you should have heard of it. The title says everything you need to know about this party, but for the details, and plenty of soft core porn pics, visit the official website.
FYI: Officially, the Castro mayhem is muerte. From Home For Halloween.com comes the definitive news: “As was the case last year, there will be NO Halloween celebration in the Castro in 2008 and the streets will NOT be closed. Traffic will flow normally. Bars and restaurants will be open for business.”
Kid friendly (and not in a creepy way):

4th Of July Weekend
By Jack Schtuff:
Things to do this holiday weekend:
- Watch fireworks in the city on the 4th [about.com]
- Fillmore Jazz Festival [website]
- Frida Kahlo exhibit at the SFMOMA [sfmoma.com]
- San Francisco Giants host the Los Angeles Dodgers [sfgiants.com]
4th of July reminder for the Schtuffers:
First, I understand that people in the city, and around the Bay Area, like to party it up a bit this weekend, but make sure you invite somebody to stay sober and drive you around. There will be checkpoints, there will be DUI’s given out like candy on Halloween, and every year – there will be related accidents that may or may not end in fatality. DON’T LET ANY OF THIS HAPPEN TO YOU!
Second, we’ve seen a large number of fires in NorCal already this year, and we can’t afford to start any more. When it comes to fireworks, DON’T BE DUMB! You don’t want to be the jackass to blame for starting a fire…of any kind.
