This is our attempt at a poll for the week, but we need a new one for Thursday. Are you curious about something (don’t be shy, it can be dirty, fun, silly, sexy, etc.) and want some public opinion? Submit your poll question and answers here or email them here and we’ll publish your poll.
Where do you like to start your day if you decide not to rush into the office?
As Wikipedia notes, Chicken and Waffles is an “unusual combination of foods [that] is beloved by many people who are influenced by traditions of soul food passed down from past generations of their families.” We San Franciscans have been left out of the trendy combination made famous by Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles, until now. Owner, Michele Mabry is opening up Gussie’s Chicken & Waffles in the Fillmore area, promising “Southern Style Comfort Food.”
San Fran is at the forefront of a dining revolution. Always considered a “foody” town, the last few years have seen a rise in the number of Community Tables. Initially awkward to sit down with strangers, this is a great away to get a sense of this fantastic city, meet people and get seated quicker! (Also a bonus – you can ask people how their dishes are).
4 eateries offering community tables:
Suppenkuche: 525 Laguna St – Hayes Valley German dining
Beretta: 1199 Valencia St – Casual Italian dining in the Mission
Bushi-Tei: 1638 Post St – Asian Fusion in Pac Ht’s / Japan Town
My personal experience:
One of my closest friends from college – go DEACONS — came to town and we wanted to hit up a relative hot spot. We rolled into NOPA and found a 2 hour wait unless we sat at the community table. Within minutes we sat down next to a nice couple on one side and four women dining together on the other side. We shared a bottle of wine or 2…or 3, asked questions about what everyone was eating and quickly got to know six new people — people helping people!

I’ve been to Cafe Claude three times and have always been impressed. I love walking down the tiny alley in the evening and seeing the lights at the outdoor tables. It’s got this really romantic, European type of feeling, and the service is excellent (our recent server was also adorable–always a nice touch). The endive salad and the trout were all excellent. There was delicious flavor in each, but not overbearing. Hence, not feeling heavy or too full afterward. My sister ordered the chicken, the flavor was richer with a dark red wine sauce, and so tender that the meat fell off the bone. Love you Claude!
John’s Grill, one of the city’s oldest and most famous restaurants, boasting patrons such as Hilary Clinton, Alfred Hitchcock, Andy Warhol, Ronald Regan and many more is celebrating its 100 year anniversary. What does this mean for you? Well, stop by on Friday between 11:30-3:30 and get yourself some cheap-ass cocktails with prices from 100 years ago. 8 cents buys you some social lubricant and appetizers. While you’re there, try to spring for one of their famous steaks or fish dishes so that they can celebrate another 100.

Over twenty top San Francisco chefs will serve aphrodisiac-inspired dishes that incorporate mood-enhancing ingredients. Whether it’s decadent oysters being sucked right out of the shell, lavish caviar pearls bursting between your teeth or foie gras melting like butter on the tongue, you can experience all that these foods have to offer.
Maybe it’s because it’s down the street from me, but Ottimista Enoteca-Cafe is an adorable wine bar that is close to my heart. The wine selection is superb, although the service is nonchalant. We love to sit at the bar inside and get a small plate or dessert and try a few wines. You’d be surprised how tipsy everyone gets off wine at this hideaway. Love it!
Hungry for a fish feast? Usually I’m a fan of broiling or Q-ing salmon or halibut, as the flame adds some color and unmistakable flavor. However the purists-especially with fresh or self caught fish–may prefer to steam their catch. It’s a healthy, easy alternative – and it’s really hard to over-cook. Snapper, sole or other white fish seems to work best for steaming, but I suppose you could use any sorta sea meat.
