By Anna M. Hibble:
Halloween can be a…tricky time. If you’ve got kids, you want them to have fun in a safe way. What a buzz kill though to have to take the bags of candy to the hospital to have them x-rayed. Meanwhile, if you’re not a kid, nor do you have them, you too want to have fun- not too safe, but all that blood and death and such is supposed to be fake, so where can you go? For the past three years, I’ve gone to a house party in Fort Mason, in a sprawling officer’s mansion overlooking Aquatic Park. This year, the hosts have decided not to… well, host, and I find I have no idea what people do now that the Castro thing is over with.
Thus from my research is born this post. You’ll see I’ve divided the ideas, which are by no means exhaustive (comment with your Halloween insider’s knowledge, please) into schtuff for adults, and schtuff for kids.
For the Adults (and those pretending to be):
- Rocky Horror Picture Show Alive: Don’t roll your eyes yet; this is not the cliched dress up and yell out the lines thing that will. Just. Not. Die. No, this is a play, a live reenactment of the film, performed by Ray of Light Theater actors.
- Halloween Ball at the Regency: lots of undressed looking costumes and DJs (I fail to see the real difference between this and a typical Sunday at the End Up). Still, the co-hosts– SalsaCrazy, GenArt, CarnavalSF– make it seem like it might be worth the ticket price.
- Exotic Erotic Ball: If you’ve not heard of it, you’ve been asleep. This does not mean you should go; it just means you should have heard of it. The title says everything you need to know about this party, but for the details, and plenty of soft core porn pics, visit the official website.
FYI: Officially, the Castro mayhem is muerte. From Home For Halloween.com comes the definitive news: “As was the case last year, there will be NO Halloween celebration in the Castro in 2008 and the streets will NOT be closed. Traffic will flow normally. Bars and restaurants will be open for business.”
Kid friendly (and not in a creepy way):
-
Harvest Fest, China Town
- Day of the Dead festivities in the Mission: Schtuff has already covered this– it is happening!
- Phantasmagorium: Nothing cooler than a spooked out Explortorium. Good Day of the Dead stuff here too.
- Haunted House on Irving St (between 6th and 7th Ave). From 6-9pm on Halloween night, a huge and mysterious Victorian will host this activity. I don’t know much about it other than seeing the sign as I drive/walk by. It also says they need volunteers, if you want to help scare children.

Hi Anna, and Schtuff readers! The ph # for volunteering for the haunted house on Irving is 415.246.4748,
Come help!
Good list.
Don’t forget that Critical Mass is that night too. Starts at 6pm at Justin Herman Plaza. Halloween usually gets a huge turnout so consider not driving if you’re coming to SF – you might get held up for a while.
great advice, Mike. And karlie, called the # and heard that you don’t need workers for the night of, but you do need them for building the house set? So all you set designer types, get down there.
Glad I found you again, Anna. I miss the Redfin blogs. Thanks for including kids in this list for parent-readers.
