Those Damn Signs

Ah, the real estate A-frame sign.  Those silly open house signs that come out in droves on Sunday afternoon are now in jeopordy.  Oh no!  We all know how much the general public loves real estate agents and the fact that agents feel the need to block sidewalks, medians and roadways to advertise their open houses is just another reason why we’re loved so much.  Now, the DPW may start fining agents for these signs that violate certain guidelines.  The DPW will soon start fining $300 for each violation under Section 63(a) of the Police Code. That section of the Police Code states that “it is unlawful for any person to place A-frame or advertising signs on the sidewalk so as to obstruct passage [or on median strips].”  Be vigilant, report crime.

Halloween in the Post-Castro-Party City

By Anna M. Hibble:

Halloween can be a…tricky time. If you’ve got kids, you want them to have fun in a safe way. What a buzz kill though to have to take the bags of candy to the hospital to have them x-rayed. Meanwhile, if you’re not a kid, nor do you have them, you too want to have fun- not too safe, but all that blood and death and such is supposed to be fake, so where can you go? For the past three years, I’ve gone to a house party in Fort Mason, in a sprawling officer’s mansion overlooking Aquatic Park. This year, the hosts have decided not to… well, host, and I find I have no idea what people do now that the Castro thing is over with.

Thus from my research is born this post. You’ll see I’ve divided the ideas, which are by no means exhaustive (comment with your Halloween insider’s knowledge, please) into schtuff for adults, and schtuff for kids.

For the Adults (and those pretending to be):

  • Rocky Horror Picture Show Alive: Don’t roll your eyes yet; this is not the cliched dress up and yell out the lines thing that will. Just. Not. Die. No, this is a play, a live reenactment of the film, performed by Ray of Light Theater actors.
  • Halloween Ball at the Regency: lots of undressed looking costumes and DJs (I fail to see the real difference between this and a typical Sunday at the End Up). Still, the co-hosts– SalsaCrazy, GenArt, CarnavalSF– make it seem like it might be worth the ticket price.
  • Exotic Erotic Ball: If you’ve not heard of it, you’ve been asleep. This does not mean you should go; it just means you should have heard of it. The title says everything you need to know about this party, but for the details, and plenty of soft core porn pics, visit the official website.

FYI: Officially,  the Castro mayhem is muerte. From Home For Halloween.com comes the definitive news: “As was the case last year, there will be NO Halloween celebration in the Castro in 2008 and the streets will NOT be closed. Traffic will flow normally. Bars and restaurants will be open for business.”

Kid friendly (and not in a creepy way):

SF Learning to Balance Budget, Just Like You and I Do, Everyday

By Anna M. Hibble:

I noticed today that the street cleaning signs on 9th Ave include now some tiny fine print: Along with NO PARKING TUESDAYS, or on the other side of the street, FRIDAYS, and the no-no hours, the signs now also say “First and Third Tuesday/Friday of the Month.” Awesome! Less tickets for me. But on a serious note, why would the DPT scale back on what has to be the biggest weekly racket ever to fill city coffers? Has to be a budget measure, right? Cutting back the street cleaning crews hours (and maybe the parking/ticketing guys too) should save SF some money, though I find it hard to believe it will save more money than the future missed tickets might have made. Still, I took this move as a sign that for once, San Francisco leaders are trying to meet budget shortfalls by spending less. Usually, their moves are more pass-it-to-the-resident, like doubling parking tickets, raising residential permit fees, raising meter rates. etc., etc., ad naseum. Nice to see some fiscal responsibility.

Indeed, Mayor Newsom has to show this responsibility. The Chronicle reported yesterday that SF faces a $250 million dollar deficit, and I don’t think we can count on George W. Bush to bail us out since he has proven to be this city’s biggest fan– a favor we return in our bid to name a sewage plant after the soon to depart President. Some of Newsom’s ideas then (as quotes in the Chron article):

  • Capital spending. Fast-track about $5.3 billion worth of capital projects that are scheduled for the next five years. Projects could include improving the city’s water system, upgrading Terminal 2 at San Francisco International Airport and building new parks and libraries.
  • Foreign investment. Encourage foreign companies, specifically in China, to expand and grow in San Francisco and invest in large construction projects.
  • Local tourism. Shift tourism advertising campaigns from overseas markets to the Bay Area, encouraging local residents to plan vacations and do their shopping in San Francisco. Also change parking and transit policies to make it easier for residents to spend their money in San Francisco, and help spruce up the city’s major visitor areas, including the Moscone Center.

Fiesta on the Hill

By Coach A:

Sunday was Fiesta on the Hill in Bernal Ht’s. Go figure it was the first crappy weather day we’ve had in October – windy and rather chilly – great hot chocolate weather. Sensing the last thing most people want to do at a street festival is discuss real estate and understanding that there would be at least 5 other real estate booths (we’re like ants – once you see one – they all appear), Garrett and I decided we’d focus on FUN for the day.  No Doom, No Gloom, FUN FUN FUN.

We had skeet ball for the kids with fun candy prizes and for mom and dad – a wheel of goodness to spin. We offered portions of our commission back based on the number spun and had some great bonus prizes on the wheel as well.  Folks seemed to enjoy it, we gave away some gifts and potentially tens of thousands of dollars in commission rebates. People helping people baby.

We were positioned next to a bake sale booth for Obama with some of the smartest 10 and 11 year old kids I’ve ever met. These kids were aware of the issues and were not just reciting mom and dad’s mantra. I was impressed. To our west was a guy who provided the first installment of Festival Drama. He was selling clothes and positioned on the corner — smack dab next to the Lumpia BBQ  — you starting to sense the problem? His clothes would have smelled like meat on a stick had he hung them. Instead, he had a heated argument with festival directors and then tore down his booth and left pretty fired up.  Ahh Drama — but wait, there’s more:
