On my way to my third time at the Grand Pu Bah, I realized I was excited with anticipation of trying another one of their dishes. To date, I have had only dishes that impressed me and made me close my eyes in enjoyment (with the exception of one interesting appetizer). You might miss the Grand Pu Bah if you are passing by or mistake it for a design outlet. Tucked between two retail design stores and sitting underneath a cluster of new condos, you have to make a point of seeking out this Thai food gem.
During my most recent visit, we were greeted by the owner, and as always made to feel welcome. The owner and restaurant staff all exude a genuine friendliness and you are greeted by an eager hello, almost as if they’re saying, “We’re so glad you’re finally here!”
You can’t go wrong starting with the Sizzling Spicy Prawns ($10). The cilantro, lemongrass, and lime flavors are strong and don’t compete; letting you enjoy each zest. The Thai chili gives the dish a nice kick that leaves you alone after you’ve finished the bite.
A runner-up is the solid Chicken Satay, ($7), served with peanut sauce. The chicken has enough flavor so that you could even skip the peanut sauce, but the together, they make a nice pair.
The “interesting appetizer” I referred to earlier is the Golden Carrot ($7). A brilliant medley of ingredients include battered carrots with sweet and sour cucumber dipping sauce. So much potential, but the carrots were shredded so thin, I only tasted the batter.
Don’t cheat yourself by not trying one of the bar cocktails. The bartenders, true cocktail connoisseurs who take pride in their concoctions, whip up different inventions on a weekly or monthly basis. My favorite is a the truly refreshing Flash ($9), mixed with #209 gin, kiwi, cucumber, and lemon juice; that wraps up each sip with a clean finish. I can’t tell if the drink reminds me of a beach in Miami or a luxurious spa day, but by the time I’ve finished my second or third, I truly do feel refreshed (and usually slightly buzzed).
The atmosphere is an upscale feel without the pretentious attitude or wait service. Dark wood floors and tables complimented with bright satin throw pillows on the benches, give the restaurant a classy and fresh feel.
A gem, located in the Art District section of the SOMA, you will find yourself delighted with the flavors you’ll find in the dishes and drinks; and impressed with the incredibly friendly staff.
