Show Me The Money!

By Jack Schtuff:

On the heels of the Slow Food Nation’s sustainable living movement and the planting of the Victory Gardens, Gavin Newsom’s plan to install roof-top solar panels, energy-efficient light bulbs and low-flow plumbing fixtures at City Hall and other civic buildings is his latest effort to go green.

However, in a time of financial belt tightening, many people are wondering where the money is going to come from. Investing in renewable energy and reducing our carbon footprint are great concepts and certainly worthy of consideration, but some argue that education and health care are also important to the sustainability of San Francisco.

What can you do?  Though green products are generally on the expensive side, many of us are buying eco-friendly soaps, clothing and cars.  National Geographic’s Green Guide has a resourceful link for your every day consumerist tendencies.

It’s difficult to weigh-in on an issue of such complexity. Green is quite the trend, and opposing Newsom’s plan will certainly not earn you many friends, especially in the Bay Area.  Then consider that our state and federal budgets are being slashed by the second – partly due to a war that costs roughly $10B per month.

Maybe if we stop spending so much money in Iraq, we’ll have the funds to rebuild our basic domestic programs…What are your thoughts on priorities for local, state or federal government?!?
